aikido
The Japanese word Aikido is a compound of Ai, Ki and Do. These words are generally translated as: Harmony, Universal Life Force, and Way. Aikido means "The way of harmonious spirit".

Aikido is different to other martial arts because it emphasizes the physical integrity of the attacker as well as the attacked. Punches and kicks aren't really present in Aikido and are mainly feigns to unbalance an attacker. Movements in Aikido flow and are circular. Aikido has an element reminiscent of dance.

Natural Movement -
Aikido aims towards movement in natural simplicity. That's why it's harder than it looks at first. When training it's not just about learning technique - in practice Aikido means learning to move away from old egocentric movement reflexes. In that sense Aikido is a discipline - a training of the will and a continual testing of one's own abilities and barriers - in the physical - and in the mental sense. Apart from this Aikido is literally a question falling down and getting up again - and of course simply a great way to train! Aikido is good for your physical condition, your concentration and your ability to react appropriately to your situation, whatever it may be.

Aikido is a martial art that comes out of a long tradition of martial arts - and it continues to evolve. Aikido lives.
